A Sabbath in October

A sabbath in October

October is my favorite month!

I love the change in the air, the different lighting, and sometimes, the cooler nights!

The garden winds down, but the flowers remain behind, their colors brighter against the browning leaves.

This afternoon, I took a relaxed walk with the cats. Seven kitties followed me, exploring and creating a ruckus with each other.

Two cats remained somewhere else—Stinker and Poppy. Poppy never walks with me, she’s too frightened, and Stinker appeared once I returned. I found her rolling in the dirt.

I had no goal for my walk, just to spend some time in nature. Mission accomplished.

I found one fig, lots of flowers, tons of aromatic herbs, and some squash and melons waiting to get picked.

I sat down on a log with my sketchbook and made some scratches. My last entry was dated 2019. I think it’s been too long.

The sketching was relaxing and aggravating. It was relaxing to spend time looking at flowers, but the actual drawing part was stressful, since I don’t know how to draw. I made a feeble attempt, and we can call it impressionistic art.

The very act of spending time outside is good for our health, so I count it a win.

I wore a groovy dress my friend gave me at church today and pretended I was a flower child. I blew out Amazing Grace on my little clay flute, or ocarina, and just enjoyed a relaxed afternoon for a change.

We need Sabbath. An October Sabbath is just the icing on the cake.

Soon we will see the changing colors in the trees. The flowers will fade, but we’ll have the leaves.

We have three more Sabbaths in October. Don’t waste them!

  1. What a beautiful post. I like that you spent time sketching. For me, there never seems to be enough of a Sabbath day. For me, as a community journalist, the events of the day are numerous and never seem to stop. So, when I get a break, I cherish it.

  2. Laurie, your post really transported me to a mystically relaxing afternoon. Flowers were blooming and cats were bobbling along in independent fashion. The Sun was shining and the herbs were redolent, taking us to a Higher Place. I am so glad you got your true Sabbath. Even God rested on the 7th day, looking around and saying, oh yes, it is Good!

What is your experience? 💜 I read every comment, and so many times I find that I gain encouragement from what’s shared. ❤️
