“Better Than Frosty” Recipe
Whip up this delicious, Vegan Frosty—a refreshing chocolate-banana ice cream treat in seconds—and experience none of the health hits that a regular Frosty causes.
I used to love a nice, ice cold Wendy’s Frosty. It was my favorite ice cream treat. The only bad memory associated with Frosty-eating happened when I lived in North Georgia. I grabbed my cold indulgence, just pulled away from the drive-thru, when out of nowhere, someone backed slam into me at a stop sign. What?
That experience has stayed with me these 25 years, just like the insurance check for $968 to pay for the car damage that got stolen and forged at the local Food Lion grocery store. I’m afraid I still remember that too. See how food memories imprint themselves in our brains?
Once I went plant based, aka Vegan (although some people think that’s a bad word), I no longer grabbed for a frosty. But do you think I stopped enjoying the taste?
Nope.
While this Vegan Frosty will not taste exactly like the original, it is a satisfying substitute, and my favorite treat (ok, besides carrot cake) to this day.
Every now and then, I’ll stop into Smoothie King, and indulge in their peanut protein packed chocolate smoothie (say that one fast three times). It’s a lot like this one, and it’s so good. I think the peanut butter makes the difference.
You can pay $6 for a 16 oz smoothie or make it yourself at home for cheap. I actually prefer making my own, but admit that when I was staying out of town, I got one of these for a meal when Austin was hospitalized.
Better Than Frosty. AKA Vegan Frosty Recipe
Equipment
- Vitamix or strong blender
Ingredients
- 5 Frozen Bananas adjust as needed to get the Frosty consistency.
- 3 Tbs Peanut butter, natural or preferred type
- 1 Splash Pure Vanilla
- 1 Scoop Vegan Protein Powder Vanilla or Chocolate—OPTIONAL
- 1/2 Cup Plant based milk—almond, oat, soy, coconut, etc
- 1 Heaping Tbs Cocoa or Carob Powder
- 3 Dates Optional
- 1 Pinch Stevia Powder Optional
- Whipped cream (vegan) for garnish, totally optional
All you have to do is throw everyone into the blender and give it a whirl! If it’s too runny (aka not as thick as a Frosty), just keep adding frozen banana, a half at a time until it’s thick enough. You might have to use the tamper to feed the frozen ingredients through the blades.
Serve it up your Vegan Frosty quick and drink it before it melts!
If you’re feeling especially indulgent, top it with some vegan whipped cream, sprinkles, or chopped nuts.
Yummy!
Share with a friend, don’t eat it all like a pig, even though it’s tempting! It’s vegan, but it’s not low-calorie!
Store the leftovers in ice cube trays and reblend in a snap!
Ingredient Notes:
You don’t have to use the Vegan Protein Powder, but if you do, I recommend Orgain. It’s clean, made from pea protein, contains no sugar, and is sweetened with Stevia. Watch for deals on it, and get it when it’s on sale. I’ve seen it at Walmart (kind of $$), Amazon (watch for Subscribe and Save deals plus a coupon), and Costco (often has a $8 coupon). Always check around and compare prices.
All Stevia powders are not created equally. Some are bitter, some taste like artificial sweetener. The best I’ve used is from CC Nature, and I get it in bulk off of Amazon. I’ve tried some that are a bit cheaper, and ended up with a big jar of powder no one eats—that’s way more expensive in the long run!
This whips up fast in a high-powered blender like a VitamixVitamix 5200 (what I use). You can also make it in a Personal Blender, but it may be a little chunkier. I’ve made it in the Kios Personal Blender that we got to make Dad’s food. Right now it’s on an amazing Lightning Deal for $39.97, plus a $3 off coupon. Not sure how long that deal lasts.
If you think and plan ahead, you can make this ahead, freeze it in your Ninja Creami containers, and make it up right before you eat it. It will make it an even better ice cream texture, which will amaze even the most skeptical veg-a-phobe! We were gifted a Creami machine for Christmas this last year! What a cool machine. (No pun intended—even though it is very cool)!
