It’s still Fall, and I’m still Loving It!!

For those in the South–aren’t you loving it that Fall has returned to temperate days and chilly nights again? It’s just lovely, so let’s enjoy it while it lasts!

This week we harvested even more tomatoes and some tomatillos from the garden. Not a lot, but enough for me to add in the peppers from last week to make a nice Italian sauce for soups and pasta. I canned up seven quarts–well, six, since one lid failed me.

We’ve had freezing temps, but so far not a really hard freeze, because my basil hasn’t kicked the bucket yet.

Our colors are still nice, but gradually we are inching towards brown forests before they all go bare on us. We have tons of leaves carpeting the ground.

That actually makes our driveway slippery–all those loose, crunchy leaves. We had a terrifying ascent up the driveway last week while pulling our trash trailer. Of course it was dark, and of course Adam, who is sixteen, with his permit, was driving.

We just couldn’t get enough momentum to make it up to the top. That meant we got stuck in the middle, and had to back up with the trailer. I was certainly no help there–I cannot get the hang of backing up a trailer on a flat surface–let alone down the driveway, in the dark, with a ditch on one side and a drop off of the other.

Apparently, Adam also wasn’t up to tackling that. In stepped Andrew, 17, and pretty confident.

Let me just say that no matter how hard nI clutched my side handle, I could still feel the terror of the descent with that trailer flopping behind us. He kept it out of the ditch, and our other choice was the drop off. As he steered the van/trailer closer and closer to that edge, I really started to lose it. Of course he laughed and kept on.

Next thing I knew, he was driving off the driveway into the dark, and I practically fainted, expecting to hear crashing metal and van parts smashing. Andrew drove way off the driveway, and I was wishing I’d have just hiked up the grabbed a spotlight for him.

Well…that kid remembered what I’d forgotten–the pull-off that Greg had made awhile back. So, our venture off the driveway did help us to turn around, and he got that vehicle maneuvered up to the top. We lost a trash can with all the bumping, but no big deal.

Sometimes I think God gave me boys just to terrify me.

Anyway, we are all still alive.

Keep my dad in prayer. He has double pneumonia and of course that’s very serious. He’s had ups and downs, but is so tired. I would be too with pneumonia, and this is just another thing to add to his ailments, so we all want to see him getting better.

Here’s a couple peeks into our Sabbath walk yesterday.

I decided to call this black cat Tubby. Greg calls him Ripper, and the boys call him Blackie. He answers to nothing, so it doesn’t matter what we call him!

Little Bit hiked with me to the top, and deserves a mention. She’s been more personable here lately. Charlie was AWOL til I came down–but he came to check out what we’d been doing at the end.
